Type Locality and Naming
Named after the Katranga River, Kuramin Range. Zh.N. Kuznetsov, et al., 1964.
Synonym: Katrangin Suite, Катрангинская св.
Lithology and Thickness
Massive agglomerate and amygdaloidal lavas and tuffs of andesites, andesidacites, less frequently dacites. At the base, a layer (thickness of 15-30m) of sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites), and conglomerates is noted. The thickness of the volcanic cover varies from 90 to 700 m on different sections.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Volcanics lie with angular unconformity on the Urubulak Fm
Upper contact
It is conformably overlain by Middle Devonian deposits. (165,460).
Regional extent
Kuramin Range, Almalyk ore region, interfluve of the Karakia and Saubulak rivers, upper reaches of the Sardobsay River, and in the form of small outcrops in the Tashgeze-Altyntopkan-Chalata strip.
